Information on Birds sessions at ISTE 2012

Birds of a Feather sessions are opportunities to engage in discussions about topics of interest. (They are not presentations.) Birds will be scheduled at the following days and times:

Monday, June 25 from 5:30 to 6:45 pm

Tuesday, June 26 from 5:00 to 6:15 pm

ISTE Special Interest Groups will also be meeting during the conference sessions and the Birds timeslots.

Purpose of the Birds Group

The purpose of the Birds group is to:

• identify prospective organizers/moderators, topics, or groups requesting meeting space

• identify collaborations between people with similar topics in mind

• gauge audience interest in the topics

• plan and develop the content (outline scope of the topic, guiding questions, useful resources, etc.)

• host results and ongoing information on the topics for a time following the conference.

Meeting space will constrain the number of Birds sessions that can be accepted. The ISTE 2012 Program Committee will make the final decisions and schedule the Birds sessions into timeslots and locations.

Timeline

February 3–March 2: Contribute/brainstorm topics and requests for meeting space

March 5–9: Evaluate topics and potential interest in topic, form collaborations

March 13: Announce list of accepted topics and moderators

March 13—ISTE 2012: Ongoing: Planning of Birds

June 25–26: Birds take place and may post results/discussions/documents to this group or start their own group on the ISTE 2012 ning.

Hi Gordon - most of the SIGs haven't scheduled theirs yet. They try to work around the BOF times, but it's not always possible with so much going on at the conference. More info will be available from the SIGs later in the Spring. Same with the Affiliates - they generally finalize all of their own receptions by April, sometimes later.   Looking forward to seeing you in San Diego!

I was recalling a discussion with Camilla from a few years back and would like to through out a question/idea for feedback.  Wondering about starting up a new SIG for technology integration specialists and technology PD specialists combined as one group.  With the re-organization, I'd be interested in feedback as to the direction of SIG.  It would likely be a very large SIG pretty quickly.  Generally SIG's start with BOF to test the waters, generate buzz and seek out leaders and mission statement.  Feedback would be great...you have my email or this forum.

I like Gordon's idea. One thing I hear a ot at ISTE is people comparing notes on how to bring along more reluctant teachers into effective use of technology. Instead of having those conversations evolve into negative comments, it would be great to have a place where people share things that have WORKED in luring and encouraging the middle of the pack 60% of teachers who are not early adopters but can be swayed. Whether this is a full time SIG or simply a BOF, I am not sure.

Comment by Gordon Dahlby on February 29, 2012 at 7:33am

Any further considerations or comments?  The BOF time could be a problem solving/sharing event or an organizing event, depending on pre-conference interests.  It would need to be clear before the program is set in print.

Great ideas! I will start organizing the birds on Monday.

This has been so much fun to follow. I am trying to figure out how I can attend them all!

Comment by ihor charischak on March 3, 2012 at 7:19am

Unfortunately for me, I wont be attending the conference this year. But if I was going I certainly would be interested in leading or participating in a math and technology BOF. Anyone out there willing to lead such a session?

Comment by Matt Huston on March 5, 2012 at 3:36pm

I think a coaching birds of a feather would be useful to many attendees who are coaches or coach-trainers. Would be willing to help organize / facilitate.

Best,

Matt Huston
